Overview
We are such stuff as dreams are made on; and our little life is rounded with sleep.
An island. But where? It exists in the madness of sleep. A man. Who? Prospero the Sorcerer dreaming of revenge, plotting for 12 years the downfall of his enemies who usurped his position as Duke of Milan, took away his temporal power and condemned him to an in involuntary exile upon an island populated by demons and monsters…
An enchanted isle…and a man’s journey of inner conflict over the subterranean landscape of conscience. The play, The Tempest; the man, Prospero: like a spider centered in the eye of the storm; spins the elements into a web of destruction fro his enemies! But all revenge is finally only destruction of self. Propero at the edge of an abyss, on the brink of despair relinquishes supernatural power to enter once again with bitter wisdom, the world of men. Prospero the man who once lost himself (and his kingdom) in the pursuance of knowledge, is brought to the realization that assume the full responsibility of ruler he must be a man and rule with all the limitations that being a man implies.
In making this choice (of returning to Milan) he must forever the sorcerer’s power, the world of the magician and the position of god on the island.
We have known about monsters, fairies, spirits, magic, since we were children and evocative power of these words still haunt us even when we are old. And perhaps no physical embodiment by actors, or visually created worlds of designers or any directorial concepts can match what we have known for a long, long time. We are almost literally “such stuff as dreams are made on”.
