Synopsis
Desdemona, daughter of Brabantio, a Venetian senator, falls in love and secretly marries the Moor, Othello, a general in the Venetian army. News arrives of the threatened Turkish attack on Cyprus. After Othello explains his personal conduct to the Duke, he is dispatched to defend the island. Desdemona is allowed to follow him, accompanied by Emilia, wife to Iago.
Othello’s ensign Iago, jealous of Cassio because he has been promoted to lieutenant, makes Cassio drunk while on duty, and secures his dismissal. Iago then persuades Cassio to ask Desdemona to intercede for him with Othello, and at the same time warns Othello that he suspects Cassio of being Desdemona’s lover. Iago finally convinces Othello of Desdemona’s infidelity by contriving that Cassio shall fall and display a handerkerchief given to her by Othello.
Iago persuades Roderigo to murder Cassio; but Roderigo fails and is himself killed by Iago to avoid betrayal. Othello, convinced of Desdemona’s guilt, murders her in her bed. Emilia sees the murdered Desdemona and proves her innocence to Othello before Iago silences her by killing her. Meanwhile, incriminating letters have been found on Roderigo, and Iago is arrested. Othello is arrested and disarmed, but by using a concealed weapon, kills himself.
