Overview
In 11th century Scotland, commanders of the Army, Banquo and Macbeth, are returning from a victorious campaign when, in a deserted place, they come upon three weird figures who confront them and make certain prophecies, one of which is that Banquo will be the ancestor of kings, another tat Macbeth will be king.
Macbeth writes about this strange meeting to his wife, who, greatly ambitious, s inflamed by the news and urges Macbeth to gain the crown, for it has been announced that King Duncan, his kinsmen, is on his way to visit them and be guest in their castle at Dunsinane.
Macbeth murders Duncan in his sleep and pretends that the drunken guards have done it. Fear drives Duncan’s son s, Malcolm and Donalbain to flee from Scotland, for Macbeth is made king. From now on suspicion and insecurity drive him to further murders, first of Banquo whose ghost appears to haunt him, and then the wife and children of Macduff, against whom Macbeth has been waned in a second meeting with the witches, who a the same time encourage and placate him by giving him a cryptic assurance that none of woman born can harm him, and that he will never bee defeated until ‘Birnham wood to high Dunsinane hill shall come’
Lady Macbeth, tortured by her guilt and coiscience, sleep walks, spilling out thoughts of the crime, soon afterwards she dies.
Malcolm joined by other Scottish lords in revolt, marches with English support against Macbeth, who lonely and bitter realises that he has failed, for the witches prophecies have betrayed him. The attacking army has come to Dunsinane, hidden by branches from the Birnham wood trees, and in hand to hand combat with Macduff, Macbeth learns that his adversary is not of woman born but from his mother’s womb untimely ripped. Fighting on with the courage of desperation, Macbeth is killed by Macduff.
The county is freed from tyrant and Malcolm is proclaimed king.
