Macbeth
Dates of performance

Scotland has been torn by rebellion. In the resulting battles, both Macbeth and Banquo have proved themselves to be brave and noble. As they journey back to the king, they encounter three “weird sisters”. These supernatural beings prophesy that Macbeth (the Thane of Glamis) will become Thane of Cawdor, as well as king. To Banquo they reveal that his sons will be kings. Macbeth writes about this encounter to his wife. Lady Macbeth immediately begins plotting how this prophecy may be fulfilled, aligning herself with dark forces. When Duncan comes to visit the Macbeths castle, Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan, so that he may become king. In fear of being accused of the murder of their father, Duncan’s sons, Malcolm and Donaldbain, flee from Scotland.
Once king of Scotland, Macbeth is unable to enjoy his new status, constantly fearing for his safety. Recalling the witches’ prophecy to Banquo, Macbeth orders that Banquo and his son should be killed. However, the murderers only manage to fulfill half their task and Banquo’s son escapes. In an attempt to deal with severe paranoia and sleeplessness, Macbeth once more consults the weird sisters.
Their prophecies appear to offer some relief from some of his fears when they assure him that he will never be defeated until Birnham Wood comes to his castle, Dunisane, as well as that no man of a woman will be able to harm him. However, they do warn him to beware of Macduff. In reaction to Macbeth’s tyrannic rule, Macduff joins forces with Malcolm in England. Meanwhile, Macbeth orders that Macduff’s family be slaughtered.
As Malcolm’s forces begin advancing on Macbeth’s castle, Lady Macbeth is seen walking and talking in her sleep, wretched with guilt. When Malcolm’s troops camouflage themselves by carrying branches cut down from Birnham Wood, the witches’ prophecy is almost fulfilled. Finally, confronted by Macduff, Macbeth learns that Macduff was not born of a woman, but by Caesarean section. Order is restored once more and Malcolm is established in his rightful place on the Scottish throne.
