Overview
As you like it, a glistening comedy of love 9often at first site), is derived principally from the Tomas Lodge’s novel, Rosalind (1590), though Shakespeare invented such people as Jacques and Touchstone. A pastoral (and satirical) romance, it belongs first of all to its bewitching Rosalind, a deity on whom the forest airs attend and one of the great testing parts for an actress. Early in the eighteenth century (Drury Lane, 17230 a stupid adaptation, Love in a Forest, left out half a dozen characters – including Touchstone and Phebe – added a mosaic from other comedies, and brought Jacques in love with Celia. From 1740, when the genuine text returned, until today, there has been a long splendour of Rosalind’s.
