Overview
One of Shakespeare’s greatest romantic comedies. A chaotic tale revolving around partnership, love and marriage. As Shakespeare says “And all the men and woman are merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, and one man in his lifetime plays many parts” (Act 11 Sc viii, 139)
Synopsis
Frederick, father of Celia has usurped the rightful throne of Rosalind, and banished him, together with his faithful followers, to the Forest of Arden.
Orlando sees Rosalind and instantly falls in love with her but when his brother liver plans to kill him he flees with the old family servant, Adam, to the forest. The paranoid Duke Frederick meanwhile banishes Rosalind as well, both girls being friends, disguise themselves (Rosalind as a boy named Ganymede and Celia as the county girl, Aliena) and with the company of the clown Touchstone also seek refuge in the Forest of Arden.
In the forest, romance and suitors abound.
While Duke Senior and his followers philosophise over the melancholic Jacques, Orlando meets a disguised Rosalind, who persuades him to believe that he is really Rosalind, and to court her. Touchstone plans his own romance with Audrey and wins her hand in spite of the advance of the commoner William, and Silvius pursues Phebe with formidable commitment, even in the face of her attentions for the disguised Rosalind.
Eventually true identities are reveald. Rosalind is restored to her father, and marries Orlando. A repentant Oliver is paired off with Celia, and Phebe is won over by the long persistent Silvius. In the final act of reconcnilitaion, Duke Frederick repents restores the dukedom to Rosalind’s father.
